Train drivers' pay to surpass £80,000 in new Labour deal

Train drivers' pay to surpass £80,000 in new Labour deal

High pay increase for LNER drivers

According to the details of Labour's agreement with Aslef, train drivers are set to see their average pay soar past £80,000. Drivers on a four-day week at LNER will enjoy a substantial £10,000 annual raise, bringing their pay to £81,278.

Union cites "toxic" relationship despite pay hike

Despite the significant pay increase, drivers at LNER have promised further strike action due to what they describe as a "toxic" relationship with the rail firm. Transport Secretary Louise Haigh, however, asserts that the deal prioritizes the interests of train customers.

Labour's offer and union backlash

If LNER drivers accept Labour's offer of unconditional pay raises of 5% for 2022-23, 4.75% for 2023-24, and 4.5% for 2024-25, they will be the second-highest paid drivers after Eurostar employees. The Aslef union has expressed discontent, with union boss Nigel Roebuck highlighting low morale among members.

Union donations to Labour Party

During the recent general election campaign, Aslef contributed £100,000 to the Labour Party. Additionally, it was revealed that Labour MP Liam Conlon, a parliamentary aide to Louise Haigh, received £4,000 from the union to support his election campaign. Shadow Business Secretary Kevin Hollinrake has suggested that these donations are a form of "payback" for the longstanding support from unions.
