Details of the lavish expenditure
Taxpayers were shocked to discover that they had funded a £6,000 bill for civil servants to stay in a luxurious Spanish hotel. The Department for Transport officials had booked six rooms for an IT conference held in Barcelona in November. This extravagant trip followed a significant pay rise for train drivers earlier in the year, authorized by the then Transport Secretary Louise Haigh.
A glimpse into the luxury hotel
The Claris Hotel & Spa, where the civil servants stayed, boasts a rooftop bar, swimming pool, spa, and two restaurants offering Mediterranean and Japanese cuisine. Situated in the heart of the city, the hotel is 3.5 miles away from the conference center where the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo 2024 took place.
Reaction from taxpayers and officials
Elliot Keck from The TaxPayers’ Alliance expressed outrage, stating that taxpayers would be furious to see civil servants enjoying lavish accommodations at their expense. The government justified the choice of the Claris Hotel by explaining that it was one of the more affordable options available, as numerous rooms had been pre-booked by the conference organizers.
