Senior government scientist allegedly branded Rishi Sunak Dr Death over Eat Out to Help Out scheme, inquiry hears

Remark made in WhatsApp message

A senior government scientist has allegedly referred to former Chancellor Rishi Sunak as "Dr Death" in a WhatsApp message, according to evidence presented at the Covid inquiry. The message, sent by Prof Dame Angela McClean to fellow expert Prof John Edmunds, made the comment in reference to Sunak's Eat Out to Help Out scheme during the Covid crisis. The scheme, which offered diners discounts at restaurants in the summer of 2020, has since been linked to the spread of the virus.

Economic scheme blamed for virus rebound

The Eat Out to Help Out scheme, introduced after the first lockdown in 2020, aimed to boost the economy by offering discounts to diners at restaurants. However, research has suggested that the scheme may have fueled the spread of the virus, leading to a larger and deadlier wave in the winter. Prof Edmunds told the inquiry that the scheme "encouraged people to take an epidemiological risk."

Sunak's rise and resignation

Rishi Sunak, who became Chancellor in February 2020, gained widespread recognition during the Covid pandemic. However, he resigned from his position on July 5, 2022, citing the need for competent and serious governance.
