Deputy Prime Minister urged to follow Starmer's lead
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is facing increased scrutiny to reimburse the cost of her £836 Ibiza holiday after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced he would repay over £6,000 for gifts received while in office. The pressure on Rayner comes as it was revealed that the Cabinet has accepted more than £11,000 in freebies since the General Election in July.
Labour figures under fire for accepting expensive gifts
Among the gifts received by top Labour officials are part of Angela Rayner's holiday, which was registered as a gift from a management firm linked to a DJ she was spotted partying with at a nightclub in Ibiza. While Rayner defended her trip as a much-needed 'down time', criticism arose when it was uncovered that the holiday was a freebie from a donor.
Public opinion sways towards repayment of gifts
A recent YouGov poll indicated that 79% of voters believe Sir Keir Starmer was right to repay some of the gifts he received. However, Starmer has yet to reimburse over £100,000 worth of gifts acquired during his time as opposition leader. Minister Sarah Jones justified this by stating that there is a distinction between actions taken in government versus those in opposition.
