New terror-style laws target people smuggling
Under new terror-style laws introduced in the UK, people smugglers could face up to five years in jail just for checking the Channel weather forecast. The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, presented in Parliament, aims to crack down on smuggling gangs before they can launch small boats.
Cracking down on smuggling gangs
The bill includes provisions to arrest anyone who collects or records information useful for organizing or preparing a relevant journey. A new offense of endangering life at sea will target those who refuse rescue or board overcrowded boats.
Empowering law enforcement
The Home Office stated it could not disclose the potential number of arrests due to operational sensitivity. The measures are estimated to cost £13.6 million over a decade. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the need to equip law enforcement with the necessary powers to combat criminal smuggling gangs.
Response and criticism
Border Security Commander Martin Hewitt highlighted that the new measures would enable enforcement teams to act swiftly to prevent crossings. However, Chris Philp MP, Shadow Home Secretary, criticized the bill as "weak" and only amounting to minor adjustments, calling for a more robust approach to deter illegal migration.
