Labour failed to report criminal allegations against ex-Chief Whip to police

Labour made aware of criminal allegations but did not alert police

Labour were informed of multiple criminal allegations against former Chief Whip Nick Brown but chose not to notify the police. Brown was suspended from Labour in 2022 over undisclosed allegations.

Labour's response to the allegations

Shadow Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood defended Labour's handling of the situation, stating that Brown's resignation resolved the issue. She mentioned that Labour's internal complaints process involves seeking outside legal advice to ensure fairness.

No police involvement despite serious nature of complaints

Despite the gravity of the allegations, Labour did not reach out to law enforcement. Mahmood emphasized that it is up to the complainants to decide whether to involve the police.

Nick Brown's current status

Brown, who stepped down in 2023 and now serves as an independent, announced his decision not to contest the next election. At 73 years old, he remains on a taxpayer-funded salary of £86,584.
