Keir Starmer stands firm on Elgin Marbles dispute with Greek PM

Historic Dispute

Sir Keir Starmer is set to stand his ground on the Elgin Marbles when the Greek Prime Minister visits London. The long-standing conflict over the historic treasures, taken to London by Lord Elgin in the 19th century, continues to be a point of contention.

No Change in Position

Despite expectations that Kyriakos Mitsotakis will raise the issue of returning the sculptures to Athens during his visit, a Downing Street source has confirmed that the UK government will not be getting involved in the matter. Sir Keir is unlikely to actively advocate for their return but would not object if the British Museum agreed to a loan deal with Greece.

Diplomatic Tensions

Last year, the dispute escalated when then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declined to meet with the Greek PM after he reiterated calls for the marbles' repatriation. Instead, Sunak sent his deputy Oliver Dowden, a move that was met with disapproval by the Greek premier.
