Labour's stance on deportation flights
Keir Starmer has declared that he will scrap deportation flights to Rwanda on his first day in office, emphasizing a shift in focus towards tackling people-smuggling gangs rather than continuing the controversial policy.
Public opinion on the scheme
Contrary to Starmer's decision, a recent poll by JL Partners revealed that 55% of respondents support the deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda or their home country, while only 22% oppose it. This surprising backing from the public poses a challenge to Starmer's stance on the issue.
Expected timeline for the deportation flights
Despite the opposition, the first deportation flights to Rwanda are anticipated to take off as early as June 24, as indicated by the Government Legal Department in response to a legal challenge from the civil service union FDA.
Channel crossings and migrant numbers
The announcement comes as 211 migrants crossed the Channel in three boats, bringing the total number of migrants who have crossed this year to 9,037. This surge in numbers has raised concerns and prompted discussions about the effectiveness of deportation policies.
