Controversy Surrounds Council Payment for Property Upgrade
Angela Rayner, the Deputy Labour leader, is facing pressure to explain why a council paid thousands of pounds to upgrade a property she claims she did not live in. The scrutiny increased after work was done to drop a kerb outside the address.
Grant for Work on Ex-Husband's Property
Sources revealed that a grant was provided for the upgrades at her ex-husband's house in Stockport, citing that one of her children is blind. However, at the time, Rayner was registered as living in a council house she purchased through the right-to-buy scheme, a mile away from the property in question.
Call for Investigation
Tory MPs are calling for a police investigation into the matter. Greater Manchester Police is expected to provide an update in the coming days, with the possibility of a criminal case being launched for false declaration on the electoral record.
Denial of Wrongdoing
Despite the mounting pressure, Rayner denies any wrongdoing. Her spokesperson stated that she sought expert advice and was informed that no tax was owed, including potential capital gains tax on the sale of her previous home.
The latest revelations are part of a new biography set to be serialized in the Mail on Sunday.
