Millions of Xbox players face potential losses as new update removes key features and restricts accessory usage
Xbox has recently announced an upcoming update that has left players fuming. The update, set to roll out in just two weeks, will eliminate compatibility with many third-party controllers and accessories, potentially costing players millions.
The changes will go into effect on Sunday, November 12, 2023, leaving players with a limited window to adjust to the new restrictions. Unlicensed third-party controllers will no longer work with the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, leaving most third-party controllers useless in just a short amount of time.
While licensed controllers featuring Xbox branding will still be compatible, a variety of other accessories, such as accessibility controllers, fight sticks, and steering wheels, will no longer function properly after the update. This move is believed to be an attempt by Xbox to increase revenue by promoting licensed third-party products.
Players attempting to use their existing third-party controllers are now encountering an error message that reads: "A connected accessory is not authorised. Using unauthorised accessories compromises your gaming experience. For this reason, the unauthorised accessory will be blocked from use on 11/12/2023. For help returning it, check with the store it came from or contact the manufacturer. To see authorised accessories, go to www.xbox.com/accessories (0x82d60002)."
While third-party retailers are reportedly working on software solutions to bypass the compatibility issue, there is no guarantee that a solution will be found in time for the update.
