An anonymous accusation
Nonfungible token (NFT) platform OpenSea has responded to allegations made on social media that its former head of ventures, Kevin Pawlak, was involved in the infamous AnubisDAO rug pull in 2021. The accusations were made by an anonymous account called NFT Ethics, which tagged OpenSea in a thread and claimed that Pawlak, under the pseudonymous identity "0xSisyphus", played a key role in hyping the AnubisDAO project to investors.
No evidence of involvement
OpenSea has denied any knowledge or evidence of Pawlak's involvement in the alleged rug pull. The company's spokesperson told Cointelegraph that Pawlak had a limited role while working at OpenSea and that they were unaware of his connection to the projects in question. The spokesperson also clarified that the events took place before Pawlak's time at OpenSea.
The AnubisDAO scandal
In October 2021, AnubisDAO raised 13,556 ETH (worth $60 million at the time) from crypto investors. However, the funds were quickly transferred to different wallet addresses, resulting in significant losses for the investors.
Doubts raised over the accusations
Blockchain sleuth ZachXBT expressed skepticism about the allegations, stating that the thread containing the accusations seemed based on assumptions and unrelated events without factual evidence. ZachXBT also highlighted that 0xSisyphus had offered a 1,000 ETH bounty to identify the wallet address that drained the funds and had engaged law enforcement in the United States and Hong Kong, which could raise doubts about the accusations.
ZachXBT suggested that negligence in the AnubisDAO case might be different from directly stealing the funds from the project. He also mentioned that two pseudonymous users, known as "Beerus" and "Ersan," were likely the main actors responsible for the loss of funds.
The allegations against Kevin Pawlak and OpenSea are still under scrutiny, and further investigation is needed to determine the truth behind these claims.
