Crypto developer platform Gitcoin has revealed that it lost approximately $460,000 worth of Gitcoin (GTC) tokens after mistakenly sending the funds to an unrecoverable contract address. The incident, which was detailed by project lead "CoachJonathan" on the Gitcoin governance forum, occurred when a transfer of GTC from the treasury was intended for a merchandise, memes, and marketing budget proposal but instead went to a GTC token contract address.

Tokens Rendered Unrecoverable

According to the project lead, the mistake has resulted in the funds being stuck in the contract, with no way of retrieving them. A total of 521,440 GTC tokens were lost, with an estimated dollar loss of $461,000 since the coin was trading at just below $0.90 at the time of the incident.

No Withdraw Function or Upgrade Option

After the transfer, Gitcoin core developers were contacted to investigate whether the contract had a withdraw function or was upgradeable. Unfortunately, it was confirmed that neither option was available, and as a result, the funds have been flagged as lost.

Improving Security Measures

As a response to the incident, the Gitcoin team has pledged to implement measures to prevent similar errors in the future and establish clearer accountability. The project lead emphasized the responsibility of large token holders and multisig signers to exercise caution when handling funds that do not belong to them.

Lost Tokens Impact GTC Supply

Gitcoin researcher Umar Khan suggested that the DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) could consider the lost tokens as a reduction in GTC supply rather than a loss of treasury funds. The mishap highlights the broken state of crypto user experience, according to observers.

About Gitcoin

Gitcoin serves as a platform to fund Web3 builders seeking open-source work. Project owners and developers can showcase their projects, while donors can peruse a list of projects and choose which ones they would like to support.

The price of GTC has seen a 1.1% decrease over the past 24 hours and was trading at $0.889 at the time of writing. Furthermore, the token has experienced a significant decline of 99% since reaching its all-time high of $89.62 in May 2021, according to CoinGecko.
