BORIS Johnson is set to “hail the moment of pride” for Britain as he lays out plans for the end of Covid restrictions TODAY.
The Prime Minister is expected to scrap all Covid rules, “finally giving people back their freedom after one of the most difficult periods in our country’s history”.
They PM will announce the end to self-isolation rules and say that the vaccination programme, testing, and other new treatments such as anti-viral drugs will keep people safe.
Speaking before his announcement on Monday, the Prime Minister said: “Today will mark a moment of pride after one of the most difficult periods in our country’s history as we begin to learn to live with Covid.
“It would not be possible without the efforts of so many – the NHS who delivered the life-saving vaccine rollout at phenomenal speed, our world-leading scientists and experts, and the general public for their commitment to protecting themselves and their loved ones.
“The pandemic is not over but thanks to the incredible vaccine rollout we are now one step closer towards a return to normality and finally giving people back their freedoms while continuing to protect ourselves and others.”
England’s ‘Freedom Day’ when all Covid restrictions will come to an end will happen on Thursday, the Daily Mail has reported.
Under the new Living with Covid plan, twice-weekly testing for kids in schools is expected to end.
Passenger locator travel forms for foreign trips are likely to be stripped later in the spring.
Covid cases are the lowest they’ve been in six months, with a total of 25,696 Brits testing positive in the last 24 hours, as well as the daily Covid death toll hitting 74.
Mr Johnson said the latest data meant it was time for the UK to shift the balance away from “state mandation” and towards “personal responsibility”.
In comments made while in Munich on Saturday, he said it was “important that people should feel confident again” and that he wanted to “see our country really getting back on its feet” in the aftermath of the pandemic.
But Mr. Johnson warned the country would not hesitate to act if Covid continued to rise.
He said: “I want to make sure that we have capability to spot stuff and to snap back up as fast as we need to.”
Under the new plans, millions of elderly and vulnerable could be offered six-monthly top-up jabs.
Ministers have already secured 114million vaccine doses for the next two years.
