Will schools close on the day of the Queen’s funeral?

SCHOOLS will be closed on the day of the Queen’s funeral.

Monday 19 September will be a national bank holiday to honour the late monarch, it was announced at the weekend.

Schools will shut next Monday for the funeral

In the same way as other bank holidays, most businesses will shut.

That includes kids going to school, who won’t be expected to be in class on Monday.

But schools will remain open for the rest of the official period of mourning this week.

And they will return to school on the Tuesday after the funeral.

King George VI’s funeral was not a bank holiday, but the government wants to help give as many people as possible the opportunity on the day of the State Funeral to mark Her Majesty’s passing and commemorate Her reign.

It comes as…

  • Prince Harry paid tribute to his grandmother the Queen, saying he cherishes the special times she met his “darling” wife Meghan and hugged his kids
  • William & Harry could walk side by side behind the Queen’s coffin at her funeral
  • Princess Anne curtsied to her beloved mum as Her Majesty’s coffin left Balmoral for the final time
  • Thousands left flowers outside royal residences across the country
  • King Charles III was proclaimed as King across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • King Charles’ relentless schedule was revealed – where he always skips one meal a day
  • Details of The Queen’s sombre final journey back to London emerged
  • A new Bank Holiday to mark The Queen’s funeral on September 19 was established

Firms are being urged to give workers the day off they can – but it’s up to employers.

There has been no decision yet made on whether the bank holiday will take place every year.

And it’s also not yet known whether there will be another bank holiday for the King’s coronation – and a decision set to be made nearer the time.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history, had passed away on Thursday – making her son, Charles, King.
