BORIS Johnson has resigned as MP as of immediate effect.

His abrupt resignation on June 10 was due to the Partygate report which the House of Commons deemed to be misleading.

The former Prime Minister said in a statement regarding the privileges committee’s Partygate investigation that they were “determined to use the proceedings against me to drive me out of parliament”.

The committee, led by Labour MP Harriet Harman, have been assessing whether Boris misled parliament regarding his statements on COVID rules and guidance which were not followed by Number 10 during lockdown gatherings.

Since the reports decision, Boris added: “I have written to my association in Uxbridge and South Ruislip to say that I am stepping down forthwith and triggering an immediate by-election.

“I am very sorry to leave my wonderful constituency. It has been a huge honour to serve them, both as Mayor and MP.”

Angela Rayner, Labour’s deputy leader, called Boris a “coward” as he “doesn’t accept responsibility for his own actions”.

The Conservatives are now facing three by-elections as Labour claims Prime Minister Rishi Sunak “has lost control of his party”.

Labour’s national campaign coordinator, Shabana Mahmood spoke to Sky News’ Jon Craig in Uxbridge and said “the country needs change” and added “the Tories are in absolute disarray, and the Labour Party can be the change that the country needs.”

Alongisde Boris’s resignation, Nadine Dorries and Nigel Adams also stepped down.

Regarding Boris’s political comeback, it remains to be seen but he does stand to make millions through writing and speeches.

Polling expert Prof John Curtice stated in May that if it wasn’t for Partygate, Boris would more than likely still be prime minister.

“It would be very unwise for him to run again,” said a former cabinet minister.

“He has a vociferous 20 per cent in the party who like him but 80 per cent don’t. If he ran in a by-election, the Lib Dems would murder him.”

After Boris quit as PM in 2022, he stated that he wanted to focus on the war in Ukraine, ensuring it doesn’t slip off the political agenda.
