UK taxpayers to pay failed asylum seekers to move to Rwanda

New voluntary scheme offers thousands of pounds for relocation

Failed asylum seekers in the UK will now have the option to move to Rwanda under a new voluntary scheme, receiving financial assistance from British taxpayers to start afresh. This initiative, separate from the existing plan to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda, aims to provide individuals who have been denied asylum the opportunity to rebuild their lives in East Africa.

Voluntary relocation to Rwanda

Following a recent agreement between Britain and Kigali, failed asylum seekers who have exhausted the asylum process and have been refused permission to remain in the UK can now choose to relocate to Rwanda. In contrast to the forced deportation of illegal migrants, individuals opting for this voluntary relocation will receive financial support from the UK government to assist in their resettlement.

Positive response to the new scheme

Last year, over 19,000 failed asylum seekers voluntarily left the UK after being informed that they would not be granted the same rights as legal migrants, including the right to work. The Home Office emphasized that the new initiative provides an alternative for individuals who are unable to stay in the UK but are willing to start anew in Rwanda.

Legislation and next steps

Unlike the mandatory deportation process, the voluntary relocation scheme does not require specific legislation. The Safety of Rwanda Bill, which aims to facilitate the removal of illegal immigrants to Rwanda, recently passed the House of Lords and is set to return to the Commons for further deliberation. Members of Parliament are anticipated to amend the bill to enable the commencement of removal flights by spring.
