New Scheme to Combat Foreign Influence
UK residents working for Iran must declare their affiliation or potentially face years behind bars, according to Security Minister Dan Jarvis. The Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (Firs) will require individuals engaged in business, trade, or political activities for the Iranian regime to register online or risk imprisonment.
Crackdown on Iranian Influence
Ministers hope that the threat of legal consequences will deter individuals from supporting the oppressive Iranian government. Mr. Jarvis emphasized the increasing boldness of the Iranian regime and their aggressive tactics to advance their agenda.
Focus on State Threat Investigations
Recent data shows a significant rise in state threat investigations, with a 48% increase in cases related to Iran. The Security Minister highlighted the regime's targeting of dissidents, journalists, and the Jewish community, as well as growing direct actions against UK interests.
Enhanced Measures and Future Plans
While Iran is the first country to be included in the new scheme, Mr. Jarvis hinted at additional nations joining in the future. The government is also working on new procedures to proscribe state-linked organizations, including the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, to combat foreign interference.
Training for Law Enforcement
All police forces in the UK will receive training from counter-terror police to identify and address "state threat incidents," as part of ongoing efforts to protect national security.
