UK Defence Chiefs Warned Against Talking in Chinese Electric Cars

Fears of Eavesdropping

Defence chiefs in the UK have been instructed to refrain from discussing sensitive information in Chinese-made electric cars due to concerns that built-in microphones could potentially record and transmit conversations, posing a risk to national security.

MoD's Push for Net Zero Targets

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has leased hundreds of Chinese electric vehicles as part of efforts to meet Net Zero targets, with plans to expand the fleet to include thousands more vehicles in the next two years to enhance sustainability.

Security Concerns and Ban on Sensitive Conversations

According to sources, a security notice has been circulated within the department, advising against engaging in sensitive discussions in electric cars. The vehicles, including MGs from China’s state-owned Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, are utilized by senior officers involved in classified missions.

Tracking Capabilities and Risks

Aside from potential eavesdropping, concerns have been raised about the tracking capabilities of these electric cars, which record travel routes and may even have interior and exterior cameras. This data collection could potentially compromise the safety of personnel by revealing patterns of movement and identifying individuals.

US Precedent and MoD's Response

Last year, the US took steps to prohibit certain Chinese car parts amid apprehensions of espionage. In response to queries, an MoD spokesperson emphasized the commitment to safeguarding national security and implementing stringent security measures to safeguard sensitive information.

Both MG and Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD were approached for comments on the matter.
