President Donald Trump has invoked the Alien Enemies Act against the Tren de Aragua gang as he continues efforts to speed up deportations. The Tren de Aragua gang, an international organized crime group from Venezuela, has been designated as terrorists by the US.
Background on Tren de Aragua gang
The Tren de Aragua gang has dominated Venezuelan prisons and is believed to have over 5,000 members. The Alien Enemies Act of 1798, last used during World War 2 to intern Japanese-American civilians, gives significant authority to the Trump administration to target and remove undocumented immigrants affiliated with the gang.
White House proclamation and proposed travel restrictions
In a recent presidential proclamation, the White House stated that members of Tren de Aragua who are in the US and not naturalized or lawful permanent residents are subject to arrest, detention, and immediate removal. The Trump administration is also set to introduce sweeping travel restrictions on 43 countries, including Russia and Belarus, in an immigration crackdown.
Introduction of gold card visas
Trump has previously announced plans to sell gold card visas for $5 million to foreigners wanting to move to the US and create jobs. These visas, described as "somewhat like a green card, but at a higher level of sophistication," could potentially attract wealthy individuals, including Russian oligarchs, to invest in the US economy.
