Legal challenge
Unite, one of Britain's largest trade unions, is gearing up for a legal battle against the Government's decision to axe winter fuel payments. They argue that ministers failed to consider the impact on vulnerable pensioners and disabled people.
Demand for reversal
The union is demanding that the Government reverses its decision by November 7 or face a judicial review. Around ten million OAPs will miss out on cold-weather cash, with only those on pension credit eligible.
Union's stance
Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham called the policy "cruel" and urged Labour to recognize the pain it has caused and take action.
Government response
The Government stated that over a million pensioners will still receive the winter fuel payment despite the changes.
Local support
Last week, North Lincolnshire Council announced that 3,000 pensioners who would miss out on the payment will now receive a £200 helping hand. The council is providing further support through an air fryer and slow cooker program for all residents of pension age.
