Tough Welfare Reforms Set to Get Thousands off Benefits

Changes in Welfare Benefits

Tough welfare reforms are set to come into force, aiming to assist thousands in moving off benefits and into work. Universal Credit claimants working less than 18 hours a week will now be expected to increase their work hours, impacting over 180,000 individuals receiving benefits.

Intensive Work Search Groups

Under the new rules, claimants will be required to join "intensive work search groups" where they will meet with coaches to strategize their career progression. Previously, claimants could work nine hours a week without the obligation to seek additional work.

Major Welfare Overhaul

Rishi Sunak's welfare overhaul includes the introduction of benefits fraud squads with the authority to arrest and fine welfare cheats. Additionally, benefits may be removed after 12 months for those who decline work opportunities, and GPs will have reduced power in signing individuals off sick.

A Focus on Fairness

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride emphasized the importance of fairness and the economic benefits of getting individuals into work. The reforms aim to strike a balance between supporting individuals and controlling the benefit bill, ensuring taxpayers' contributions are utilized effectively.
