Timeline for New Tory Leader Revealed
The Conservative Party is set to unveil its new leader on November 2, according to plans devised by party chiefs. However, uncertainty looms over whether current leader Rishi Sunak will remain in his position until then, as the final plan awaits approval by the Conservative Party's ruling board.
Selection Process and Key Dates
The process to select the new Tory leader involves four candidates presenting themselves before the Conservative Party Conference in October, followed by a postal ballot of members. Nominations open on July 24, with candidates needing the backing of ten MPs to progress to the first round of voting. Throughout August, campaigning will take place across the country, leading up to voting by Tory MPs on September 4, 9, 10, and 11. The field will be narrowed down to four candidates who will speak at the party conference in Birmingham from September 30. Subsequent votes in October will further reduce the candidates to two, with the new leader set to be announced on November 2 after a postal vote of members.
Potential Contenders
Several MPs have hinted at running for the leadership position, including ex-Cabinet ministers Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick, Priti Patel, James Cleverly, Tom Tugendhat, and Mel Stride. Outsider ex-ministers Gareth Davies and Kevin Hollenrake are also reportedly considering bids. Conservative HQ bosses are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to finalize the proposed dates for the leadership selection process.
