Tory MPs warn No10 they could blow election chances by not building enough homes

TORY MPs have warned their No10 bosses they could blow their election chances by not building enough homes.

Conservatives are facing a backlash from voters after dropping house building targets — with some Tories now worried they are being seen by the public as turning into the “Nimby” party.

The “Not In My Backyard” row exploded after Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he would reinstate the targets if he wins the next general election.

Earlier this week, Sir Keir was accused by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of trying to “concrete over the green belt” and “ride roughshod over local communities”.

The Government is still committed to building 300,000 homes every year, as young people struggle to buy their own.

But ministers dropped the compulsory building targets set for local councils in December, amid a brewing rebellion from their own MPs.

Expressing alarm, Tory MP Justin Tomlinson said: “People need houses to live in. Rising housing costs — rent, mortgage, deposits — plays badly ahead of polling.”

Fellow Tory Mark Jenkinson said: “Short-termism on housing will cost us dearly.”

Sir Keir said under Labour, first-time buyers will get priority on new properties in their areas.

He claims new powers will let town halls ensure 300,000 homes can be built each year.
