Tory MPs Revolt Against Plans to Ban Conversion Therapy

Tory MPs Revolt Against Plans to Ban Conversion Therapy

Over 40 Tory MPs Sign Letter Opposing New Law

Plans to ban trans and gay conversion therapy in the UK are facing a major setback as a mass revolt by furious Tory MPs threatens to derail the proposed legislation. Over 40 MPs from the Conservative Party have signed a letter to the Prime Minister, demanding that he abandon plans for the new law.

Fears of Unintended Consequences

The proposed Bill would have prohibited institutions from offering conversion therapy, which claims to be able to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. However, the MPs argue that the legislation could inadvertently criminalize parents and teachers who simply express their belief that individuals should not change genders. They warn that the new law could have far-reaching consequences beyond its intended purpose.

No Immediate Action Expected

According to a senior government source, there is little chance of the conversion therapy ban becoming law before the next election. The proposed legislation has not been included in the King's Speech, which will be delivered next month. Instead, the Prime Minister plans to publish a draft Bill for pre-legislative scrutiny, effectively delaying any further action on the issue.

MPs Speak Out Against the Ban

Several Conservative MPs, including those with government roles, have voiced their opposition to the ban. They argue that criminalizing individuals for expressing their views on gender identity could have serious implications. One MP stated that they would never vote in favor of a conversion therapy ban, and warned that the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, would face a significant revolt if he attempted to push the legislation through.

Downing Street has declined to comment on the contents of the King's Speech.
