Tory MP Suspended Amid Claims of Misusing Campaign Funds

Allegations of Demanding Money for Release

A Tory MP has been suspended by the party after being accused of asking an elderly party volunteer for £5,000 to pay off individuals who had allegedly locked him in a flat. Mark Menzies reportedly made a late-night call claiming it was a matter of "life and death."

Disputed Accusations and Party Investigation

Mr Menzies disputes the claims reported by The Times and has resigned the whip while the Tory Party conducts an investigation. The Chief Whip confirmed that Menzies will sit in the Commons as an independent during the probe.

Additional Funds Transfer for Medical Bills

Aside from the £5,000, it was reported that Mr Menzies also received £14,000 from campaign funds to cover private medical bills since 2020. His office manager raised concerns about these transactions, prompting further investigation by the party.

Responses from Mr Menzies and Conservative Party

In a statement to The Times, Mr Menzies denied the allegations and stated that he has followed all declaration rules. The Conservative Party confirmed that they are looking into the matter and treating it as confidential.
