Peers Spark Fury by Rejecting Flagship Bill
Peers in the House of Lords have ignited anger by blocking the Government's Rwanda plan for the fourth time. Despite reassurances from opposition parties in private, critics in the Lords have sent Rishi Sunak's key Bill back to the Commons.
Concerns Over Safety and Protections
The latest vote, with 245 against 208, highlighted concerns that Rwanda cannot be considered safe until certain protections are in place. Additionally, a vote of 247 to 195 emphasized the need to exempt individuals who have assisted the UK military, like Afghan interpreters, from being relocated.
Next Steps and Political Standoff
The legislation will now return to the Commons for further review on Monday. With Rishi Sunak lacking majority support in the House of Lords, the back-and-forth between the two chambers is expected to continue until a resolution is reached.
