Tory candidate apologises for joking about drugging women in social media posts

Jokes about Rohypnol and disrespectful comments

A Conservative Party candidate, Oliver Johnstone, has come under fire for joking about drugging women with Rohypnol in resurfaced social media posts from 2012. In the posts, he made disrespectful comments about women being "too used to this liberation nonsense" in response to a controversial press release.

Apology and response from the Conservative Party

Mr. Johnstone, who works as a stockbroker in Manchester, has since apologized "wholeheartedly" for his remarks. When approached about the posts, he expressed regret for the comments made several years ago. A Conservative Party spokesman stated that the party has reminded Mr. Johnstone of the code of conduct and standards expected of candidates, including on social media.

Recent trend of apologies and resignations

This incident follows a recent trend of Conservative candidates apologizing and resigning due to inappropriate social media posts. Last week, two other candidates, Sam Trask and Adam Gregg, issued apologies and stepped down from the election after controversial posts from their past resurfaced.
