RISHI Sunak aides insist families will be looked after whoever wins the Tory fight — in the clearest sign yet his team is coming to terms with defeat.
Despite weeks of berating leadership opponent Liz Truss, key Sunak supporter Victoria Prentis said cost of living help would be implemented by the new PM.
Sunak is polling significantly behind Liz Truss in the Tory leadership contest
She says the next leader will be ready to get going as soon as they are sworn in next week.
With the finish line finally in sight, the junior minister said: “Whoever wins, there will be well-worked up plans for them to put in immediately.”
As pressure mounts on the Government to do more to help with bills, she added: “Some interventions have already been made but I am sure we will have to do more”.
However, she argued nationalisation of the energy industry or freezing the price cap was not the solution, but that targeted support was needed.
She told Times Radio: “We need to make sure that, while we will be providing some general support, most of our support goes to those really vulnerable households, particularly pensioners, people with disabilities, for example, people who really don’t have other options.”
Ms Truss last night risked a fresh scrutiny row after pulling out of a planned BBC interview.
Her team told presenter Nick Robinson she no longer had time for his half-hour show this week — despite Mr Sunak earlier doing it.
Meanwhile, Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi is travelling to the US to seek joint solutions to the crisis with top bankers and government officials there.
