Sunak accuses Starmer of hiding consequences
Sir Keir Starmer's plan to strip 10 million pensioners of winter fuel payments faced criticism from Rishi Sunak during a fiery clash at Prime Minister's Questions. Sunak accused Starmer of repeatedly refusing to admit or publish the consequences of his decision on the winter fuel allowance. He also mocked Starmer after dozens of Labour MPs did not back the cut in a recent vote.
Labour MPs abstain in protest
No vote was recorded for 53 Labour MPs, with only one voting against the government. Around 40 MPs did not have permission to miss the vote and are believed to have abstained in protest at the policy. The PM defended the cut, stating that increases in pensions would outstrip any loss of payment due to the triple lock.
Reeves defends means-testing
Chancellor Rachel Reeves reiterated the decision to means-test the benefit, worth up to £300. She highlighted the need to address a £22 billion black hole in public finances and emphasized the importance of tough decisions to stabilize the economy.
