Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer wants to include 16-years-olds and EU citizens living in the UK in the elections

A massive row exploded in Westminster last week after Sir Keir Starmer said he wanted to massively expand the franchise, to include over 16s and EU citizens who have lived in Britain without citizenship for “years and years.”

But the Tories accused the opposition of trying to “rig the electoral system” in order to make it easier to undo Brexit.

Labour’s policy would apply to those EU citizens with “settled status”, which is more than three million extra voters.

The poll shows that 38 per cent of Brits believe such a move would make rejoining the EU one day more likely.

They would only support giving the vote to EU citizens from countries that would reciprocate such a move – with 49 per cent then saying they would support such an arrangement.

Currently such a relationship only exists with the Republic of Ireland for resident citizens.
