Sir Keir Starmer Told Price of New Brexit Deal Would Be Rejoining Single Market

Michel Barnier dismisses Labour leader's plans to rewrite Brexit deal

Sir Keir Starmer's proposal to rewrite the UK's Brexit deal has been met with criticism from Michel Barnier, the former chief negotiator for the European Union (EU). Barnier stated that renegotiation was not an option without a significant change in stance from the UK, emphasizing the importance of choosing between being in or out of the single market. While he acknowledged the possibility of amendments to improve certain aspects of the deal, such as veterinary arrangements, Barnier emphasized that the single market must remain intact.

"No Room for Unraveling of the Single Market"

Barnier reiterated his position on ITV's Peston show, stating, "There is no room for any kind of unravelling of the single market" during the negotiations. This response comes after Sir Keir Starmer expressed confidence in achieving a "much better" deal if elected and staying out of the common market and customs union.

Tory Response

Following Barnier's remarks, a spokesperson for the Conservative Party criticized Starmer, claiming that his answer to every question is "more Europe." The spokesperson also highlighted the potential cost of Starmer's renegotiation, stating that it would involve rejoining the single market and customs union.
