SHOCK figures have exposed the Government's inability to expel illegal immigrants and foreign criminals who express a desire to return to their home countries.
Plummeting Deportation Numbers
The data reveals a significant drop in the number of migrants being sent back home after requesting deportation, with a 40 per cent decrease over the past decade according to Labour analysis.
Despite the existence of the Voluntary Returns Service, which assists migrants without the right to reside in the UK who opt to go back, the Home Office's removal processes have dwindled from 31,762 in 2010 to 19,253 in the last year.
Government Chaos or Lack of Requests?
Labour attributes the decline to Government "chaos", disputing that it is due to a reduction in deportation requests.
While Home Office sources mention facing challenges, Labour MP Jessica Morden recently highlighted a case in the Commons where a convicted sex offender, willing to cover his flight costs, has been waiting for over three years to be returned to Iraq.
Accusations of Incompetence
Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper criticized the Home Office's delays in deporting failed asylum seekers and foreign national offenders who have volunteered for deportation, attributing it to chaos and incompetence under the Conservative government.
A source close to Home Secretary James Cleverly dismissed Labour's accusations as hypocritical, pointing out Labour's voting record against Conservative immigration control measures.
Home Office Response
The Home Office stated that the number of removals has been on the rise in recent years, with a notable 74 per cent increase in voluntary and enforced returns between 2022 and 2023.
