Security Minister Urges Increase in Defence Spending

Tom Tugendhat Calls for Immediate Action

The Security Minister, Tom Tugendhat, has added to the pressure on Chancellor Rishi Sunak by advocating for an immediate surge in defence spending. Tugendhat is pushing for 2.5% of the national income to be allocated to defence without delay.

Pressure Mounts on Rishi Sunak

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing mounting pressure to secure funds for a substantial increase in defence spending to meet the 2.5% target of national income. Tugendhat's call for action comes in the wake of an opinion piece co-authored by Foreign Office Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan, urging the PM to prioritize defence.

Government's Stance on Defence Spending

The Government's current position is that defence spending will reach the 2.5% mark "as soon as economic conditions allow." Tugendhat emphasized the need for immediate action, stating that the first goal should be to reach 2.5%, with adjustments made as challenges evolve.

Divided Opinions within the Government

While Tugendhat and Trevelyan are advocating for a swift increase in defence spending, Defence Minister James Cartlidge has expressed reservations, citing the need for the economy to sustain such a hike. Cartlidge indicated that while defence spending is set to rise to 2.3% next year, capital spending will see a decrease in 2024-25.
