And Mr Sunak said the nation had much to look forward to, including the King’s coronation next summer and pledged to put Brits “priorities first.”

The PM said: “Now, I’m not going to pretend that all our problems will go away in the new year.

“But 2023 will give us an opportunity to showcase the very best of Britain on the world stage, continuing to stand with our Ukrainian friends against Putin’s brutality, and defending freedom and democracy wherever we find it under threat.”

Mr Sunak said the coronation, due to take place in May, will see the nation “come together with pride in everything that makes this country great.”

Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer said he had “renewed vows to make the future better” in his message for 2023.

The opposition leader is enjoying a 26 point lead against the Tories as the year comes to an end.

A People Polling survey said 45 per cent of people reported that they would back Labour in a general election.

Just 19 per cent told the pollster that they would vote Conservative.

Sir Keir said 2023 should be a “new chapter for Britain” and called for the nation to “become a fairer, greener, more dynamic country.”

Lib Dem Leader Sir Ed Davey said he was also looking forward to the “truly historic and joyful occasion for our family of nations” at the coronation.
