Rishi Sunak champions nuclear defence upgrade
Rishi Sunak is set to praise the upgrading of Britain's nuclear defences as a "critical national endeavour." The Prime Minister will introduce a new fund, supported by £20 million in public funds, to stimulate growth in Barrow-in-Furness, home to the Astute class submarines and Dreadnought programme.
Major investment for growth and security
Over the next decade, an additional £180 million annually will be dedicated to grants for local organizations and enhancements in transportation and healthcare outcomes in the region. Industry giants like BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, EDF, and Babcock are teaming up with the government to inject approximately £763 million into skills, jobs, and education.
Creating opportunities and bolstering the sector
The initiative aims to generate over 8,000 career prospects to help fill 40,000 new roles in the sector by 2030. This move comes amidst concerns about global risks posed by nations like Russia and China, prompting the need for increased defense spending.
Focus on safeguarding the future
Prime Minister Boris Johnson emphasized the significance of safeguarding the country's nuclear deterrent and energy industry in an increasingly dangerous world. The Defence Nuclear Enterprise Command Paper, to be presented in Parliament, outlines efforts to sustain and modernize the UK's at-sea nuclear deterrent.
Calls for increased defense spending
Despite calls for a boost in defense funding, there was no new allocation in the recent budget, leading to criticism from various quarters. Chancellor Rishi Sunak defended the government's position, citing the significant increase in defense spending since the Cold War.
Transforming Barrow-in-Furness
The Barrow Transformation Fund, managed by the Barrow Delivery Board, will distribute the initial £20 million towards key projects, such as infrastructure development and employment support. This investment is expected to strengthen the UK's submarine enterprise and bolster national security.
