Rishi Sunak Demands China Step Up Eco Commitments Ahead of COP28 Summit

PM Urges Real Action from China on Global Warming

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called on China to increase their eco commitments ahead of the COP28 summit. Sunak wants the Communist state to demonstrate "real world action" in dealing with global warming.

Pushing for 1.5 Degrees

Sunak plans to use the summit in Dubai, which will be attended by around 160 leaders, to advocate for maintaining plans to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. He stressed that significant action is needed to keep this goal alive.

China's Crucial Role

A spokesperson for No10 emphasized that China's involvement is crucial to the overall plan. Sunak recognizes the challenges faced by all countries and believes that China, as a major player, must take action.

China's Absence

Chinese President Xi Jinping will not be present at the Dubai summit. Instead, Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang will represent China at the event.

UK's Commitment and Funding

The UK has successfully reduced carbon emissions by almost 50% since 1990. In line with their dedication to climate action, Sunak will announce £1.6 billion in funding for climate projects at the summit. This includes £300 million for energy projects worldwide.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer will also outline his plans today to make the UK the "green finance capital" of the world, further emphasizing the country's commitment to tackling climate change.
