Illegal migrants in hotels surge

More than 8,000 extra illegal migrants are currently housed in hotels post-election, with asylum claims hitting a record high. Only three per cent of small boat arrivals have been deported since 2018, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current immigration policies.

Rising asylum claims and hotel costs

By December, 112,187 asylum seekers were accommodated by the government, with costs escalating to approximately £4.5 million per day. Despite Labour's pledge to end hotel use, the number of occupants rose from 29,585 in June to 38,079 by the end of 2024.

Tougher stance on asylum approvals

While asylum claims saw an 18 per cent increase last year, the proportion of approvals dropped from 67 per cent in 2023 to 47 per cent in 2024. This shift indicates a stricter evaluation process for asylum requests, potentially contributing to the surge in hotel stays.

Deportation rates remain low

Deportations of small boat migrants have remained alarmingly low, with just 3 per cent being sent back over the last six years. The lack of a significant deterrent has led to concerns about unchecked immigration and the financial burden on taxpayers.

Government response and enforcement

Both Labour and Tory officials have highlighted the need for stronger enforcement measures to address the challenges posed by rising migration numbers. The government's Plan for Change aims to increase returns and improve border control strategies to tackle illegal immigration more effectively.
