Public Opinion on Immigration and Labour's Economic Management

Record High Disapproval on Immigration

Seven in ten voters now believe that immigration levels have been too high over the past decade, with half of them stating it has been "much too high." This sentiment marks a significant increase from just 53% five years ago. According to YouGov, public attitudes on immigration have reached a record negative since the tracker was launched in 2019.

Concerns Over Labour's Economic Management

Adding to the challenges faced by Labour, only 23% of voters trust the party to manage the economy, compared to 24% for the Tories led by Kemi Badenoch. The pressure on Labour intensified with the mass resignation of 20 Nottinghamshire Labour councillors, citing concerns over the party's direction and decisions like removing universal winter fuel payments from pensioners.

Action Plan on Immigration

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, returning from a family holiday, is set to address the growing concerns over border controls and the fallout from the Budget. Net migration under the Tories reached a record 906,000 last year, prompting Sir Keir to criticize it as an "open borders experiment." He has pledged an action plan in the new year to reduce immigration to sustainable levels.
