New Flexibility for Apprenticeship Qualifications

Under new plans to boost home-grown talent and reduce reliance on immigration, the government is considering scrapping the requirement for apprentices to pass maths and English tests. This move would allow employers to assess a trainee's ability to perform the job without being hindered by academic struggles.

Support from Business Leaders

A recent poll of bosses, including prominent figures like Alan Sugar and TV's Lord Alan Sugar, showed that 71 per cent of them support this idea. Institute of Directors spokesman Alex Hall-Chen highlighted that increased flexibility could lead to more employers offering apprenticeships.

Focusing on Practical Skills

Mike Worley from apprenticeships provider HIT Training questioned the necessity of passing exams for certain professions like chefs or care workers. He emphasized that practical skills and job performance should be the key focus rather than academic achievements.

Government Response

Currently, trainees who do not meet GCSE grade requirements must pass level 1 numeracy and literacy tests. The Department for Education acknowledged the need for more flexibility and stated they are exploring ways to make improvements in the system.
