Victory for Trending In The News as ministers bring in Jade's Law
Parents who kill a partner will be stripped of their rights to make decisions about their shared children's lives, in a major breakthrough for Trending In The News. The new law, known as Jade's Law, will prevent these killers from choosing their children's schools and even having control over their passports. Justice Secretary Alex Chalk announced the move to close a legal loophole that allowed murderers to hold parental rights. The campaign, spearheaded by Trending In The News, was inspired by the tragic case of Jade Ward, who was murdered by her estranged partner Russell Marsh in 2021. Despite being sentenced to life in prison, Marsh retained parental rights over their four children, granting him access to their medical records, school reports, and the ability to veto family vacations.
Campaign success
Trending In The News's campaign, supported by Jade Ward's family, has successfully led to the creation of an automatic suspension of parental responsibility for individuals convicted of killing a person with whom they share parental rights. Justice Secretary Alex Chalk expressed gratitude for the passionate campaigning, stating, "Thanks to the passionate campaigning of Jade's family, and Trending In The News, we are creating an automatic suspension of parental responsibility from a person who is convicted of killing a person with whom they share parental rights."
Plans to be announced
Justice Secretary Alex Chalk will outline the details of the new law during his speech at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester tomorrow. These measures will form part of the Victims and Prisoners Bill, which will also grant judges the power to compel offenders to attend court for their sentencing.
