Pressure Mounts on BBC
Downing Street has intensified pressure on the BBC to categorize Hamas as terrorists, emphasizing that the broadcaster is not restricted from doing so. This comes as protests are expected regarding the BBC's coverage of Hamas' actions.
No10 Insists on Labeling Hamas
No10 has called on the BBC to label Hamas as terrorists, countering the argument that doing so would be biased. BBC journalists have previously used the term to describe other acts of terrorism, such as the 9/11 attacks and the Bataclan massacre in Paris.
Legal Position Confirmed
A spokesperson for Rishi Sunak stated that Hamas is legally classified as a proscribed terrorist group. They emphasized that using the term "terrorist" is an accurate legal description. The spokesperson also noted that the recent attack in Israel was one of the deadliest terror attacks globally since 1970.
FA Criticized for Lack of Support
Football Association (FA) officials have been cautioned that they need to do more to honor the victims of Hamas' attack on Israel. Criticism arose after the Wembley arch was not illuminated for the match against Australia. Downing Street suggested that the FA could show more support as England prepares for their upcoming game against Italy.
Show Support for Israel
When asked if Wembley should light up in white and blue to demonstrate solidarity with Israel, a spokesperson for No 10 stated that given the atrocities Israel has faced, it is important for the entire UK to express support. The spokesperson also indicated that the FA has fallen short in their memorials and can do more to demonstrate support.
