MPs' pay set to soar to £93,904 next year despite backlash

Controversial pay hike

MPs are set to see their pay rise to £93,904 next year, a 2.8 per cent increase that is above the rate of inflation. The decision has been met with criticism as pensioners face cuts and farmers protest tax hikes.

Defending the increase

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, responsible for setting MPs' pay, justified the raise by stating it reflects the wider working public sector population's experiences. The decision is expected to be finalized after a short public consultation next month.

Backlash from critics

Critics, including the TaxPayers’ Alliance, have condemned the pay hike, describing it as unjustifiable given the economic challenges faced by taxpayers. They argue that politicians should only be rewarded based on the country's economic performance.

Mandatory review

MPs' pay must be reviewed within the first year of a new parliament as per the law. However, due to timing issues, the 2.8 per cent increase has been deemed an "interim measure" until a full review can take place.
