Government urged to beef up defence budget
Ministers are under pressure to halt billions of pounds going towards Net Zero projects and instead divert the funds to bolster the country's defence, as demanded by MPs. The Government's commitment to £25 billion in eco projects is facing scrutiny as costs continue to escalate.
Cost estimates for Net Zero goals
The Climate Change Committee estimates that the state will need to spend between £107 billion and £363 billion by 2050 to achieve Net Zero goals. When factoring in private investment, the total cost could reach £972 billion by 2050, although potential operating savings could offset some of the expenses.
Criticism from MPs
Tory MP Esther McVey emphasized the importance of redirecting funds towards defence, stating that the £25 billion allocated to Net Zero projects could be better utilized for national security. Fellow Tory MP Nick Timothy criticized Energy Secretary Ed Miliband's approach, labeling it as detrimental to the economy and a misallocation of funds.
Call for increased defence spending
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage echoed the sentiment, highlighting the urgent need for higher defence spending rather than channeling resources into Net Zero initiatives. The debate intensifies as reports suggest the Treasury is considering cutting funding for GB Energy, a publicly owned company established by Ed Miliband to support clean energy and decarbonization.
