Ministers Rule Out Reopening Victorian Jails to Ease Prison Overcrowding Crisis

Too Long to Prepare

Ministers have made the decision to not reopen Victorian jails in an effort to alleviate the prison overcrowding crisis. Despite considering reusing facilities such as Holloway in North London, it was determined that the process of getting them ready would be too time-consuming, Trending In The News on Sunday has learned.

Focus on Rehabilitation

Former Home Secretary David Blunkett is set to propose the construction of mini prisons to house around 100 inmates each, with a strong emphasis on rehabilitation. Blunkett believes that embarking on a prison-building blitz is essential, but argues against the creation of mega prisons due to the lengthy time they would take to establish.

Early Release for Thousands

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced on Friday that a significant number of prisoners will be released early, with some being eligible after serving 40% of their sentences, starting in September. However, she clarified that the most serious and violent offenders will not be included in the early release scheme.

Warning of System Collapse

Ms. Mahmood highlighted the urgent need for action to address prison overcrowding, warning of a potential collapse of the prison system if steps are not taken promptly. She expressed concerns about the repercussions of overcrowding, including court delays and limitations on police activities.
