Housing Secretary Gives Green Light for Increases Above Legal Limit
Millions of Brits are set to be hit with council tax hikes exceeding £150 starting in April. Housing Secretary Angela Rayner has caused controversy by approving six financially struggling local authorities to raise local levies beyond the legal 5 per cent limit.
Planned Increases for April
The majority of town halls are expected to raise council tax by the maximum 5 per cent from April. However, residents in Bradford will face the steepest increase at 10 per cent. Newham and Windsor and Maidenhead councils will also see significant hikes of 9 per cent, while Birmingham, Trafford, and Somerset will experience a 7.5 per cent rise.
Impact on Residents
The council tax hikes will result in Band D properties in Bradford paying an additional £195 per year, and households in Birmingham facing an extra £128 annually.
Government's Justification
Angela Rayner defended the increases as necessary to "fix the foundations" of local authorities struggling with high demand for social care and special educational needs services. Local Government Minister Jim McMahon emphasized the government's commitment to providing long-term stability and support for councils.
