Majority of Tory voters call for halt on immigration not essential to NHS

Survey Results

According to a survey by the Centre for Migration Control, three-quarters of Tory voters are in favor of halting all immigration except for that deemed essential to the NHS. Additionally, over eight in ten Tory voters want to see a reduction in the overall rate of net migration to the tens of thousands.

Government Response

Legal Migration minister Tom Pursglove noted that net migration had decreased by ten per cent in the year leading up to December 2023. He emphasized the Conservative party's commitment to taking decisive action to lower migration levels by 300,000 and manage migration flows effectively.

Housing Shortfalls and Impact on Public Services

A report released by Conservative MPs Robert Jenrick and Neil O'Brien highlighted the significant impact of migration on housing shortfalls, attributing nearly 90 per cent of the issue to migration. The report points out that the current rate of adding people is unsustainable and calls for realistic solutions to address the housing crisis.

Criticism and Concerns

The MPs expressed concern over the lack of substantial growth generated by migrants and criticized the government for allowing net migration to exceed 3.7 million since 2010. They highlighted the strain on public services and infrastructure caused by the rapid increase in population due to migration.
