Labour to unveil plans to bring trains back under public ownership

Long-awaited announcement

Shadow Transport Secretary Louise Haigh is set to finally reveal today how her party intends to return the running of trains to Government control, following months of delay reportedly due to internal disagreements.

Details of the proposal

Haigh will emphasize that there will be no cost to taxpayers for compensation as train operations will only be taken back into public ownership once current contracts expire. The plan includes the creation of Great British Railways (GBR) to oversee infrastructure and contracts, but Labour's version of GBR would be unified, publicly owned, and accountable, led by rail experts rather than government officials.

Industry criticism

However, industry bodies like Rail Partners have criticized the proposal, warning of increased taxpayer costs and potentially reduced train services. Rail Partners CEO Andy Bagnall stated that nationalization could lead to higher costs over time and may result in decreased services or increased subsidies, ultimately competing with public services like the NHS for funding.

Labour's response

Ms. Haigh will defend the plan, highlighting that a publicly owned railway under Labour's reforms would prioritize delivering reliable, safe, efficient, accessible, affordable, and quality services for passengers, holding the system accountable for meeting these standards.
