Labour threatens to report Lib Dems to the POLICE over by-election 'smear' tactics

Labour accuses Lib Dems of 'smear' campaign

Labour has threatened to report the Lib Dems to the POLICE over by-election "smear" tactics. The party claims that their candidate in the Mid-Bedfordshire contest is being targeted by a deliberate and cynical attempt to damage his electoral prospects.

Labour alleges two breaches of the Representation of the People Act

In a cease and desist letter, Labour's legal team accuses the Lib Dems of committing two breaches of the Representation of the People Act. The first is regarding alleged false statements on campaign literature that claim their candidate does not live in the constituency and is a London councillor. Labour states that their candidate has resigned as a councillor in London and has relocated back to Shefford in Bedfordshire.

Labour demands apology and retraction

Labour has demanded that all existing leaflets are destroyed, and that they receive a written apology and retraction. They warn that failure to comply with their requests will result in a report being made to the Police and a referral made to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Lib Dems accuse Labour of 'dirty tricks'
