Labour MP urges PM to abolish Sentencing Council to prevent discrimination in court

Labour MP's Call

Labour MP Jonathan Brash has called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to abolish the Sentencing Council in order to prevent discrimination against white men in court. Brash believes the council is out of touch with the British public and that elected officials should have more control over sentencing decisions.

New Sentencing Guidelines

Starting Tuesday, the Sentencing Council will introduce new guidelines for judges to consider the racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds of offenders when determining sentences. The guidelines also advocate for similar considerations for women and transgender offenders, leading to concerns about a potential two-tier justice system.

Government Response

While the government is reportedly exploring the option of emergency legislation to challenge these new guidelines, any changes would not be implemented before the rules go into effect.
