Idris Elba tipped as Labour's choice for next London Mayor

Labour's preferred candidate

Labour party officials are eyeing actor Idris Elba, known for his role as bad boy cop Luther in the BBC hit TV show, to potentially replace Sadiq Khan as the next Mayor of London. The party sees Elba as a perfect blend of star power and political activism, with a senior party source calling him the top choice on their wish list.

A campaigner against knife crime

Idris Elba, who was born and raised in Hackney, East London, has been actively involved in campaigns to tackle issues like knife crime. He has worked alongside Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on initiatives to prevent youths from getting involved in gang violence, advocating for blunting the points of knives to reduce stabbings and save young lives.

Other potential candidates

While Elba is considered a "long shot" by some within the party, other names being mentioned as possible candidates for the London Mayor job include Dragons Den star Deborah Meaden, Labour MPs Dawn Butler, Stella Creasy, and Rosena Allin-Khan, as well as Foreign Secretary David Lammy. Sadiq Khan is expected to step down ahead of the next mayoral election, likely to take place in 2028.
